Sequential Sampling Plans for Larval Populations of the Japanese Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in Turfgrass

Abstract:

Sequential sampling plans for arriving at a decision concerning control measures for 2nd-instar populations of Popillia japonica Newman are described. The plans were developed based on common Ks from negative binomial distribution, a currently recommended economic threshold level that calls for control measures when the average count of the 2nd instar is ≥3, and no control when the count is ≤ 1 per 0.09 m2, and with two risk levels, 5 and 10%. The sequential sampling plans are arranged in tabular form to facilitate their use. Additionally, the average sampling number and operating characteristic curves are obtained and found to show negligible differences in the number of samples required when the risk is reduced from 10 to 5%.
