Dates in wooden crates were fumigated with phosphine under a 6-mil polyethylene tarpaulin. Insects exposed in various positions within crates of dates were killed except for some eggs of Ephestia cautella (Walker) from which three adults emerged after fumigation. Gas concentrations during the 5-day fumigation, measured with an IR analyzer and phosphine detection tubes. were in close agreement. Concentrations increased to 649 ppm during the first 40 h of the fumigation, then decreased to ca. 50 ppm after 120 h. Residues of phosphine on dates after fumigation ranged from <0.0007 to 0.0013 ppm as measured by two different methods. The phosphine fumigation of dates under a polyethylene tarpaulin appears practical.
