Abstract:

A prototype unit of an automated conveyor belt larval rearing system performed equally with the standard tray method in rearing larvae of the melon fly, Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett, the oriental fruit fly, D. dorsalis Hendel, and the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann).All phases of larval culturingare facilitatedby the belt rearing system; moreover, rearing can be done at a constant temperature of 27°C, unlike the tray system, which requires cooling of the culture to prevent larval losses due to overheating. Overall labor costs can be reduced by 80%.
