Abstract:

L-7063 [N-((5-(4-broomopheny1)-6 methy1-pyrazinyl)amino) carbonyl)-2-chlorobenzamide] and L-1215 [(2,6-dimethoxy-N-(5-(4-(pentafluoroethoxy)phenyl)-1, 3, 4- thiadiazol-2-yl)benzamide] both show a high degree of biological activity against mosquito larvae. However, an organophosphorous-resistant strain of Culex quinquefasciatus Say showed possible tolerance to L-7063; pressuring this strain with L-7063 led to cross-resistance in four generations. This represents the first report of cross-resistance to the benzamide-type structure in mosquitoes. Both L-7063 and L-1215 are relatively safe to nontarget, aquatic organisms; although field applications do cause temporary depressions in cladocerans, the populations quickly recover.
