The droplet-size distribution patterns of five solvents injected under controlled pressures and into controlled wind velocities were measured with a laser in a laboratory wind tunnel used to evaluate insecticidal aerosols. Each solvent was injected through an atomizer at one of four air pressures into a constant velocity air stream (2.5 m/sec). Air pressures of 31.0 and 41.3 kPa produced the smallest droplet-size distribution patterns; >75% of the acetone, fuel oil, and kerosene droplets atomized at 31.0 kPa were <10 m, whereas water and methanol required 41.3 kPa for similar patterns. Resmethrin as a 1% solution in each solvent had little effect on altering the patterns. Insecticide evaluation and cleanup time can be greatly reduced when the wind tunnel is used instead of individual topical applications or Peet-Grady tests.
