Abstract:

Feeding by Phyllotreta. cruciferae Ooeze and P. striolata (F.) adults significantly reduced seedling stands, plant heights, and dry-matter yields of conventional-till forage kale seeded in August. These losses were avoided by broadcasting 10% carbofuran granules at the time of seeding. Conventional-till losses in stand and yield were more efficiently reduced by broadcasting carbofuran 10G than by spraying carbofuran 4F over the row. Seedling survival of kale planted in the greenhouse was inversely proportional to the infestation level of adult P. cruciferae. Late-July seedings of untreated minimum-till. forage kale had significantly less stand loss, feeding damage, and dry-matter yield reduction caused by feeding of adult P. cruciferae and P. striolata than did untreated conventional-till seedings.
