Competitiveness of gamma-sterilized male insects is frequently evaluated from the egg hatch resulting from competitive mating tests. We describe a procedure to calculate the variance of the estimated competitiveness value which then permits detection of significant differences between competitiveness values. Previously published data obtained with tephritid fruit flies have been reanalyzed, and the results are presented to illustrate the use and value of the statistical procedure.
