Evaluation of Various Artificial Diets for In Vivo Production of the Gypsy Moth Nucleopolyhedrosis Virus

Several artificial diets previously developed for rearing the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), were compared to the modified hornworm diet and high wheat germ diets for production of the gypsy moth nucleopolyhedrosis virus (NPV). Virus yields were highest from larvae reared on the modified hornworm diet. Biological activity (=potency) of virus from larvae reared on the modified hornworm diet, high wheat germ diet, and ODell-Rollinson diet was comparable. The high wheat germ diet would be most suitable, from a cost-effectiveness standpoint, for large scale in vivo production of the virus.
