Diapause in Heliothis virescens (F.) was studied under field and laboratory conditions. Induction curves for larvae collected from the field and maintained in an outdoor insectary were bellshaped, with peak diapause occurring from mid-, to late-October. Throughout the autumn, however, only a small percentage of the total field population entered diapause. Larvae also showed a weak tendency to diapause in the laboratory when reared under a constant temperature of 20°C and daylengths of 10, 11.5, 12, 12.5, 13, and 14 h. The 12-12.5 h light regimes produced the greatest levels of diapause, despite large variability among replications of the same treatment. High temperatures (25°C) reduced the diapause response at all photoperiods tested.
