Effects of Substituted Benzylphenols on Reproduction of House Flies

2 ,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-[(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl] phenol(AI3-70691) prevented all reproduction by female Musca domestica L. when fed a 1% concentration in the diet, injected at a rate of 5 g/female or treated topically at a rate of 20 g/female. However, sterilizing effects were impermanent. Male fertility was affected only slightly when the compound was fed at 1–2% concentrations. 5-ethoxy-6-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethyl]-1,3-benzodioxole(AI3-53060) was likewise effective when females were injected with a dose of 10 g/female or fed a diet containing 0.1 % of the compound. At nontoxic doses, no sterility was induced in males by feeding or injection.
