Reduction of Almond Moth/Populations in Simulated Storages by the Release of Genetically Incompatible Males

Abstract:Males of a native strain (US) of Ephestia cautella (Walker) that is reproductively incompatible with an Iranian strain (I) were released into simulated warehouses in a 3-yr study of population suppression. Populations were greatly reduced by males released at ratios of 9 US:1 I and 24 US:1 I. The higher ratio consistently reduced population levels more than the lower ratio and eliminated the I populations in 50–80% of the trials. These results indicate that the use of reproductive incompatibility is a potential means of population suppression.
