Abstract:Rubber septa treated with 20 mg of (Z)-11-hexadecenal and 2 mg of (Z)-9-tetradecenal, the primary components of the sex pheromone of Heliothis virescens (F.), caught as many males as live females when they were used in cone traps. Rubber septa baits were fully effective for the 10-week test penod, whereas laminated baits used for comparison (20 mg total, 16:1 ratio of components) were as effective as females for 3 weeks with decreasing effectiveness for 2 more weeks and were totally ineffective after 5 weeks. Rubber septa baits are inexpensive, easily prepared, and long lasting.
