Abstract:

Crosses between a strain of Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) from Australia and from the U.S. were fully fertile. Reciprocal crosses between both these strains and P. scutigera (Holdaway) were characterized by reduced mating and eupyrene sperm transfer and low fecundity and fertility. F₁ progeny obtained by crossing P. scutigera females with P. gossypiella males (U.S. strain) were sterile when backcrossed to P. gossypiella (U.S. strain) but fully fertile when back crossed to P. scutigera. Also, 1st and 2nd backcross progeny were fertile when crossed with P. scutigera. Males of both species had 30 pairs of chromosomes.
