Abstract:

Treatment of laboratory-reared adult males of Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) with 30 krad of gamma irradiation and the subsequent successful mating with unirradiated females resulted in an avg 4.2% egg hatch.

The avg number of 1st entries in apples resulting from each successful mating was 54.0 and 0.42 for the 0 and 30 krad treatments, respectively. The avg number of healthy F1 adults produced by these same crosses was 21.0 and 0.09, respectively.

When the F1 males were paired with normal females and compared with control pairings, reductions of 74.2, 50.1, and 100% were observed for mating, oviposition, and egg hatch, respectively.
