Japanese Beetles: Quantitative Determinations of Larval Resistance to Chlordane in Ohio

The magnitude of resistance to cyclodiene insecticides in 3rd stage larvae of Popiliia japonica Newman from 4 locations in Ohio were tested quantitatively for resistance to chlordane by using standard dosage-response procedures and statistical analyses. The resistance factor for 2 resistant strains compared with the susceptible strain chosen as the standard ranged from 10.2–15.5-fold at the LD50 level over the 6-week period. When dosage-mortality lines were computed for all 4 strains, true resistance and homogeneous populations were indicated by the steepness of the slopes. Thus, the time-mortality data indicated that the amount of chlordane required for LD50 or LD95 decreased with increased time of exposure.
