Treatment of test insects with phosphine generated from Phostoxin pellets in open-ended elevator bin spouts showed that Sitophilus granarius (L.) and Tenebroides mauritanicus (L.) could be controlled by the fumigant in a partially open system at temperatures from 25° to lO°C. Air currents diluted and removed fumigant as it was generated, and the rate of air movement varied according to differences in temperature of the grain in the spouts, the bins, and in the surrounding atmosphere. However insects were still controlled by long exposures to very low concentrations of fumigant. Tests in the laboratory showed that a dosage as lowas 0.5 ppm would kill 99% of S. granarius in 21 days.
