American foulbrood (AFB) disease recurred within one season in all colonies of Apis mellifera L. estahlished on contaminated unfumigated combs whether or not the bees received an initial feeding of oxytetracycline (OTC) supplemented with sugar. The disease recurred within 2 seasons in 22% of the colonies established on fumigated but in only 8% of the colonies established on fumigated equipment when the bees had received OTC initially. There was no recurrence of infection in colonies established with adult bees shaken from infected colonies if they were hived on fumigated equipment and fed OTC or on uncontaminated equipment with or without OTC treatment. Apparently the number of spores of AFB transferred with the bees was below the level required to initiate infection.
