In the summers of 1971 and 1972, small plot field experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of Heliothis nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) for control of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), and the bollworm, H. zea (Boddie), in cotton. In 1971, an NPV cottonseed oil bait preparation was compared to an NPV preparation applied in a conventional water diluted spray, an insecticide control, and an untreated control. In 1972, the NPV cottonseed oil bait preparation was compared at spray volumes of 1 gal/acre and 5 gal/acre. In weeks when control plots show maximum damage, the bait-NPV treatments and the conventional virus treatments using 50 and 100 larval equivalents (LE/acre) (1 LE = 6×109 polyhedral inclusion bodies, PIB) of Heliothis NPV protected squares and bolls as well as the standard insecticide treatment. This evaluation shows that control of the bollworms was attained with the bait-NPV formulation equal to our present method of control.
