When engorged nymphs of Amblyomma maculatum Koch were dipped in emulsions of chlorpyrifos at intervals timing the 13-to 14-day molting cycle, the LC50 value for nymphs on Day 0 (day of detachment) was 0.0011%; on Day 7, 0,16%; and on Day 13, 3.90%. Susceptibility of the nymph to the insecticide decreased 3546 times during the molting period. Consumption of oxygen during the molting period did not correlate with the decrease in susceptibility. Apparently the nymphal cuticle formed a passive barrier to penetration of the insecticide during the molting cycle and was the major factor controlling the decrease in susceptibility to the insecticide.
