Abstract:

Populations of Tinea fuscipunclella Haworth larvae, breeding on coastal and inland poultry ranches in southern California, characteristically showed annual spring and early-summer peaks followed by two smaller mid- and late-summer surges. Larval distribution in hen manure was relatively uniform, although some larvae tended to concentrate near warmer areas of ranches during the spring. This species probably has increased in importance as a public health nuisance coincident with urbanization. No evidence exists to suggest a significant density rise or distributional extension over the past decade.
