The use of ULV drift spraying from ground equipment has been tested for several years as a means of distributing the nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) of the bollworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), in cotton fields (L. A. Faleon of this department, unpublished data). A major problem has been the evaluation of the distribution of polyhedra on different parts of the target plants at varying distances from the ULV spray generator. The incorporation of dyes or other chemical tracers in the spray mix was found to cause coagulation and precipitation of the NPV. In view of the success of fluoreseent antibody labelling for the detection of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner deposits (D. E. Pinnock, unpublished data), it was decided to test this technique for H. zea NPV.
