Abstract:

Trichlorfon and Bay S-2217 (2-choroethyl methyl (2,2,2-t richloro-I-hydroxyethyl) phosphonate) were about equally toxic to larvae of the tobacco bud worm, Heliothis virescens (F,) , and trichlorfon and ethyl trichlorfon (diethyl (2,2,2- trichloro- 1 - bydroxyethyl) phosphonate) were equally toxic to larvae of the boll worm, H.zea (Boddie). However, trichlorfon was more toxic to tobacco bud worms when it was applied a an ultra low volume spray (ULV,1/2 gal or less per acre without water) than when it was used as a conventional spray (CLV, more than 1/2 g-al per acre with water). Vapors of dichlorvos from impregnated wafers killed all moths of the pink boll worm, Pertinophora gossypiella (Saunders), within 24 hours for 19 days. The ULV sprays of naled formulated with some adjuncts maintained 57% or more of the applied naled on the surface of cotton leaves for 24 hours, but none remained on the surface more than 2 hours when the naled was applied as a CLV spray.
