A single relase (9:1 treated vs. untreated) of male Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) that had been irradiated with a substerilizing does of gama irradiation (15 krad) reduced an untreated cage population by 92% within 2 generations, When males were completely sterilized (30 krad) and released in the same manner, the reduction was only 82%. Increased control obtained with substerile makes is attributed to inheritance of sterility by the F, progency; completely sterile makes can affect only the progency of the parent generation. Release of substerile male moths into a natural population appears to be practical method of insect control.
