Low densities of Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt were released into confined populations of Tetranychus mcdanieli McGregor on apple in early season. Release treatments included release rates of 32, 64, 128, and 256 predators per tree replicate. All release rates maintained host populations below 15 mites per leaf during the season. In check trees with no predator releases, host populations exceeded 120 mites per leaf. A release of 128 T. occidentalis per tree provided the most ideal release treatment, as host mites were maintained at a stable density of about 2-4 T. mcdanieli per leaf for a 6-week period. The low levels of release and the success of these experiments suggest that release programs of T. occidentalis to control T. mcdanieli may be practical and economically feasible.
