Chemosterilants derived from 5-triazine comprise aziridinyl alkylating agents, melamines, and 6-substituted 2,4- diamino-5-triazines. All are effective in Musca domestica L., but the aziridinyl triazines and melamines sterilize both sexes, whereas the diaminotriazines sterilize only females. Tests with 25 diaminotriazines revealed characteristic effects on the late stages of embryogenesis that were not induced by the other classes of triazines or by other types of chemosterilants. Generally, oviposition of flies treated with lowest effective dose of diaminotriazines was normal, and egg hatch was reduced only slightly; however most or all the larvae died before pupating. As an additive to the flies' diet, 2,4-diamino-6- (2-furyl) -5- triazine induced such effects at concentrations as low as 2.5 ppm.
