Abstract:

The percent inhibition of Musca domestica L. microsomal aldrin epoxidase was used to compare levels of an endogenous, heat-stable inhibitor in several fly strains. Microsome activity was reduced 60-65% by one head of strains with wild-type eye color but only slightly in those with the white and ocra mutants. Neither the degree of resistance nor the microsomal oxidase activity of the strains studied affected the inhibitor content of the head. One half to % of the inhibitory capacity of the head was lost in preparations from whole flies. It is suggested that the inhibition is due to the ommochrome pigments such as xanthommatin.
