Abstract:

The nucleic acids from the eggs of normal and chemosterilized Musca domestica L. were studied after methylated albumen-kielselguhr (MAK) column chromatog . raphy and sucrose-density-gradient (SDG) centrifugation. The flies were chemosterilized by feeding apholate, tepa, or thiotepa for 36 hours after they emerged. Tepa-14C and thiotepa-32P also were used to determine if the chemical or metabolic products were incorporated into the eggs. No DNA synthesis was found in any of the chemosterilized eggs as determined by MAK column chromatography, but the sedimentation pattern of the RNA and intermediates after SDG was very similar to that of normal eggs. A small quantity of 14C from tepa- 14C was incorporated into the chemosterilized eggs, of which 80% was associated with low-molecular-weight intermediates of the nucleic acids.
