Abstract:

Laboratory tests were made to determine the susceptibility of Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders) in Arizona to Biotrol BTB 183, a commercial preparation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner. Field tests were made to determine if this preparation could be used effectively for earlyseason control of the pink bollworm on cotton.

The laboratory tests showed that first-stage pink bollworm larvae were susceptible to Biotrol BTB 183 when fed this material incorporated in artificial medium. Some mortality was obtained by placing first-stage larvae on the leaf surface of treated cotton plants for short periods and then returning them to artificial medium. In the field tests, several application rates of both a wettable powder and a dust were compared, but none of these treatments successfully suppressed the pink bollworm populations.
