To obtain a gross estimate of field mortality of larval populations of Musca autumnalis De Geer in Virginia, approximately equal numbers of eggs laid in the laboratory were placed in trays of manure inside insect-proof cages and inside insect-accessible cages. Differences in numbers of resulting pupae were considered to be caused by the biotic environment. Larval mortality averaged 49% in 1966 and 63% in 1967. Adult flies emerged from 92.1% of the pupae in the protected cage but from only 47.4% of the exposed pupae. As as result of exposure to the biotic environment total reduction of adult flies was 80.1\%.
