Abstract:The 5 larval instars of the saddled prominent, Heterocampa guttivitta Walker), were distinguished by characters relating to a combination of head-capsule size and color and the presence or absence or dorsal protuberances. Body 00\01' and markings were much too variable for this purpose.
A large proportion of the first 3 instars fed on the undersides of leaves. Therefore, the aerial application of an insecticide should be made when most of the population has reached at least the 3rd stage. Of the 2 hosts examined, development was faster on beech than on maple. Prespray samples should be taken from the latter species to assure maximum protection.
