When Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), reared in the laboratory on green thinning apples, were irradiated by cobalt00, longevity was reduced greatly when the dose was 8 krad, the amount necessary for complete sterilization of both sexes. However, when a substerilizing dose (6 krad) and a high overflooding ratio (40 treated males:l norma male: 1 normal female) were used, more than 60% of all males survived 3 weeks, and the number of larvae produced was decreased by 90%. Part of this reduction appeared to arise from harassment of the females by the great number of males. Testing of the sterile-release technique in the field appears to be justified.
