The resistance of individual plants of three varieties of carrots, 'Nantes', 'Imperida', and 'Royal Chantenay', to the feeding of 2 species of lygus bugs, Lygus hesperus Knight and L. elisus Van Duzee, was determined by caging adult lygus bugs on the umbels during seed development. The degree of resistance was measured by percent mortality of the caged insects. Each variety of carrot exhibited individual plant differences in resistance to lygus bug feeding. Also, differences between varieties was exhibited. Imperida possessed a low, Nantes a high, and Royal Chantenay a very high degree of resistance.
