Abstract:Leaves of the china berry tree yielded a substance extractable with chloroform that deterred feeding. Retarded development, and caused mortality in the larval stage of the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), and the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). When it was incorporated into a meridic diet or applied to corn seedlings grown in the greenhouse. The effects were easily measured 6 days after 1st-instar larvae were subjected to the treatment and they became more pronounced later.
