Abstract:

Male and female adults and male pupae of the azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) , were sterilized by applying hexamethylphosphorothioic triamide (thiohempa) topically to the dorsal side of the insects. The female pupae were only slightly susceptible. The median oviposition-inhibiting doses for the adult insects were 22.383 µg per ♀, 45.952 µg per ♂, and 15.737 µg per weevil; the median hatch-inhibiting doses were 8.291 µg per ♀, 9.156 µg per ♂, and 3.487 µg per weevil; the LD50 values were 36.399 µg per ♀ and 21.733 µg per ♂. For the pupal stages, the median hatch-inhibiting doses were 9.039 µg per ♂ and 6.565 µg per pupa. Thiohempa was 3 times as effective as the closely related chemosterilant hempa when adult females were treated, it was 16 times as effective when adult males were treated, and it was 4 times as effective when adults of both sexes were treated.
