Abstract:When 7 mold inhibitors were tested alone and in combination in the larval rearing diet of Trichoplusia ni (Hubner), effects on pupal weight, eclosion, adult deformity, oviposition, and egg viability through 4 generations were slight and variable.
Ottasept® (3.5-dimethyl.4-chlorophenol) and sorbic acid at more than 1000 and 4000 ppm, respectively, were ovicidal when they were incorporated in the diet; when they were suspended in agar, sorbic acid at more than 750 ppm and Ottasept at 100 ppm were ovicidal by fumigant action alone. Butyl p-hydroxybenzoate incorporated in the diet caused 10-40% unsilked pupae. High concentrations of butyl p.hydroxybenzoate, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate. and sorbic acid lengthened the time required for larval development.
