The leaf feeding of the adult western corn rootworm, Diabrotica uirgifera LeConte, on corn plants exhibiting visual symptoms of nitrogen deficiency, zinc deficiency, and no deficiency was studied. It appeared the pubescence on the upper lea f surfaces was affected by the nutrient condition of the corn. The zine-deficient corn had the least number of hairs per leaf and the greatest amount of leaf injury. The healthy corn had fewer hairs than the nitrogen deficient plants, but no difference occurred in the amount of leaf injury. The close correlation between the amount of leaf pubescence and amount of leaf injury indicates that pubescence may act as a barrier to the feeding of adult western corn rootworms.
