Abstract:An aerosol system for daily automatic dispensation of dichlorvos (DDVP) in confined areas was tested for control of cigarette beetles, Lasioderma serricorne (F.). Preliminary studies indicated that the vapors resulting from daily applications of 0.47 g/1000 ft3 were effective against caged adult beetles in a 2-hour exposure period. Larvae were less susceptible and eggs were apparently not affected.
In a large warehouse, where caged adult beetles were exposed to the vapors from a similar dosage for ½, 3, and 16 hours, mortalities were respectively 55, 95, and 100%. The decline in the number of insects caught in suction-light traps over a 6-week period during which this system was in operation was proportionately much greater than in a similar warehouse in which no dichlorvos was dispensed.
