The results of a special aspect of a North-Central regional European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), project were analyzed, namely, the relation between plant height and the yield of field corn as affected by borer infestation. The analyses were based upon results from Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio from 1953 through 1957. The following points were made: (1) The resistant variety, Oh43×Oh51A, suffered less reduction in plant height than did the susceptible variety, WF9×M14, with the same degrees of initial borer infestation. (2) The resistant variety stood a greater degree of reduction in plant height without a significant reduction in yield than did the susceptible variety. This was a fact, whether the reduction in height was due to borer infestation or to adverse weather and soil conditions. Thus, it is suggested that Oh43×Oh51A has a tolerance to borer injury in addition to its well-recognized resistance which reduces borer survival. (3) The susceptible variety, particularly with early planting, showed a significant correlation between the percent reduction in plant height and the percent reduction in yield caused by borer infestation. This fact suggests that in such plantings the effect of borer infestation on yield is primarily through its adverse effect on the vegetative growth of the plants.
