Of several systemic insecticides tested for their effectiveness in controlling the clearwinged cottonwood leaf aphid, Chaitophorus populellus Gillette and Palmer, Meta-Systox- R® (S-2- (ethylsulfinyl) ethyl O,O-dimethyl phosphorothioate) appeared to be the most effective material tested, when injected into the tree both through the root and trunk. Bayer 39007 (o-isopropoxyphenyl methylcarbamate) and dimethoate, when mixed with 5 gal of water and applied as a soil drench, exhibited marked toxicity to the grass surrounding the trees, but Meta-Systox-R, fenthion, and Nellite (phenyl N,N-dimethylphosphorodiamidate) did not. Use of Mauget Implant Injectors® proved to be a much simpler, cleaner, and less hazardous method of treating trees than either soil drenches or root injection with hypodermic syringes.
