Dispersive activity in native populations of screw-worm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) is most evident in the northward extension of the distribution of this species in the spring from subtropical overwintering areas (Parman and Barrett 1941). The ability to disperse rapidly also enables relatively small populations of flies restricted to small areas by hot, dry weather to quickly reinfest broad areas upon the return of favorable conditions for survival (Deonier 1946). Barrett (1937) concluded that screw-worm flies moved northward beyond overwintering areas at the rate of about 35 miles/week.
