Abstract:
Several systemic insecticides applied in different ways effectively reduced sheep bots, Oestrus ovis L., infesting lambs. Nasal sprays of dichlorvos in mineral oil at rates of 1.2 to 4.2 mg/kg of sheep reduced bots 87% to 99%. Doses of 4.7 to 9.8 mg/kg reduced bots 99% to 100% but were toxic to the sheep. When administered as oral drenches or feed additives, Bayer 9017 (O,O-diethyl O- (3,5-dimethyl-4-methyl thiophenyl) phosphorothioate) at 30 mg/kg and Bayer 9018 (O,O-dimcthyl O-(-3,5-dimethyl-4-methyl thiophenyl) phosphorothioate) at 40 mg/kg reduced bots 99% to 100%. Both compounds showed promise as pour-on treatments.A nasal spray of Bayer 9017 at 5.1 mg/kg reduced buts 97%; a nasal spray of Bayer 9018 at 5.9 mg/kg reduced bots 54%; a nasal spray of trichlorfon-coumaphos at 5.1 mg/kg reduced bots 87%.A pour-on of trichlorfon applied at 100 mg/kg reduced bots 56%; a pour-on of Famophos (O-p- (dimethylsulfamoyl) phenyl O,O-dimethyl phosphorothioate) at 100 mg/kg was ineffective.Document Type: Research article
