Abstract:

Synthetic candidate lures were exposed to European chafer beetles, Amphimallon majalis (Razoumowsky), during the flight seasons from the last week in June through the third week in July in 1957, 1958, and 1961; of 441 tested, 35 gave promising leads. Butyl sorbate performed best, its attractiveness equalling or slightly exceeding that of the previous standard, Java citronella oil and eugenol. Unlike the latter, butyl sorbate does not attract the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman. Its use in areas where this species also occurs eliminates the necessity of frequent servicing of chafer traps to keep them functioning. Modifying butyl sorbate by diluting with eugenol or ethyl aleohol or by altering the length of wick exposed did not alter the attractiveness appreciably. The rate of volatilization of the lure parallels that or the standard.
