Abstract:

The atomization of aerial sprays is commonly expressed in terms of the mass median diameter (mmd) of the spray drops. Most mmd determinations in the past have been made from measurements of all drop sizes collected across the spray swath. Recently, the D-max: method was developed for determining mmd from the largest drops only.

A study was made to determine the precision of these methods under a variety of meteorological conditions. This study showed that as much as ±20% variation from the mean can be expected among mmd estimates made by either method. However, there was a greater central tendency in the grouping of the estimates about the mean when the D-max method was used. None of the variation encountered could be ascribed to meteorological conditions prevailing at the time the tests were conducted. The study indicated that it was largely, or wholly, due to sampling error.
