Investigations were made to develop a method that would provide a rapid and integrated evaluation of chemosterilants in screening programs with screw-worm flies a,nd house flies. Fifty chemicals were tested against larvae of the house fly (Musca domestica L.), and screw-worm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel)) by dipping and against the adults by feeding and topical application. The larval dipping produced no chemosterilant action at the dosages tested. The topical application gave positive results with some compounds, but some compounds were insoluble and with other compounds the toxic effects overshadowed the sterilant action. The most effective technique was feeding; 13 compounds caused complete or nearly complete sterility in screw-worm flies and 7 in house flies.
