In au effort to find a fish suitable as a predator on the Clear Lake gnat (Chaborus astictopus Dyar & Shannon (Diptera: Culicidae)), several species have been given laboratory stud,). By introducing fish into aquarium tanks with lake mud and an assemblage of bottorn organisms of known quantity, it was possible to determine the number of each species eaten after a period of feeding by the fish. By far the most effective bottom feeler found was the little aeneus catfish, Corydoras aeneus (Gill). This species was found most effective against species of the midge family Chironomidae, being almost 100% effective in all tests run.
