Abstract:Insecticides were evaluated in Oregon for control of the vetch bruchid, Bruchus brachialis Fahr., in hairy vetch seed production in an attempt to reduce the possibility of a chemical residue on the small-grain companion crop normally seeded with vetch. The following toxicants selected and their control performances compared with the standard DDT recommendation: methoxychlor, malathion, Guthion® (O,O-dimethyl S-(4-oxo-1,2,3-benzotriuzin-3 -(4H)-ylmethyl)phosphorodithioate), and Dibrom® (1,2-dibromo-2,2-dichloroethyl dimethyl phosphate) plus Volck® Supreme Oil.
All treatments reduced vetch bruchid populations, and seed collected from treated plots germinated in excess of 90%. In addition, the populations of the pea aphid (Macrosiphum pisi (Harris)) were reduced in those plots treated with an organic phosphate insecticide.
