Tests with Compounds Showing Synergistic Action with Rotenone against Body Lice1

Abstract:Sulfoxide and piperonyl butoxide were highly synergistic with rote none in laboratory tests against body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus L.; (Anoplura:Pediculidae), and 1,2-methylenedioxy- 4-[2- (octylsulfonyl)propyl]benzene, 5-buty 1-5-ethy1-2- (3,4-methylenedioxy)- m-dioxane, and the alpha-allylpiperonyl ester of fen colic acid showed a lower degree of synergism. Rote none alone was less toxic to lice than the other compounds. A powder containing 0.5% of rote none and 5% of sulfoxide was highly effective for a longer period than one containing 0.2% of pyrethrins and 2% of sulfoxide in tests against DDT-resistant lice on human subjects.
