Abstract:

The Scientific Manpower Bulletin of the National Science Foundation for April 1962 was devoted to an article entitled“Summary Characteristics of Scientists Reporting to the National Register of Scientific and Technical Personnel, 1960. A Special Report for 1962 Registrants.”Among the data that are summarized in that report is a table which includes the geographic location of the over 200 thousand scientists who reported to the National Register in 1960. The entomologists are not reported separately but are grouped with others under“Biological Sciences“. C. W. Sabrosky after reading this report wondered pointedly how the distribution of entomologists who are members of the E.S.A. compared with the distribution of all scientists reporting in the United States. We have reprinted the figures as given under“Total”in Table 4 of the report for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The categories“Foreign”and“No Report”were deleted and the total to be considered was thus reduced to 195, 312 individuals. Percentages were calculated on the basis of this total.
