Host Preference and Acceptance by Leiophron uniformis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): Effects of Rearing on Alternate Lygus (Heteroptera: Miridae) Species

Abstract:Leiophron uniformis (Gahan) reared on Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) or Lygus hesperus Knight were not preconditioned to attack either host preferentially in choice tests. However, L. uniformis, which had been reared on L. lineolaris for five or more generations, did accept that host 2.5 times as often as did wasps reared on L. hesperus. Regardless of the rearing host, most eggs (36–93%) deposited in L. lineolaris were encapsulated, and the parasitoids did not show any increase in resistance to encapsulation even after they had been reared on L. lineolaris for 11 generations.
