Abstract:

In laboratory studies, mature virgin females of Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) caged in groups of 5 laid a large number of eggs (none viable), 66–87% as many per female as mated females caged singly or in groups of 5 (about 90% egg viability). On the other hand, mature virgins caged singly laid comparatively few eggs, only 16–56% as many per female as virgins caged in groups, irrespective of whether the former had had previous contact with other mature virgins and despite the fact that their ovaries were full of eggs. The presence of immature females had a positive stimulating effect on the amount of oviposition by a single mature virgin, but the presence of Drosophila flies had no stimulating effect. An explanation of these results is discussed.
